Why Aren't I Wearing: This Vintage Frank Usher Dress?

POWER DRESSING JACKPOT! The description of this bonkersly rad 1980s dress basically parallels everything I want my life to be. (I've bolded the most attractive parts to emphasize how much they relate to everything I love and strive for.)

An incredible vintage 1980's Frank Usher beaded cocktail gown, with substantial shoulder pads. Literally dripping with beading, bold silver sequins and bugle beads are encrusted across the shoulders and cuffs, and in a zig zag band across the front and back bodice. The dress is in black silk chiffon, with a sheer panel across the top of the bodice. The remainder of the dress is sprinkled throughout with sparkling black bugle beads. An exceptional dress for the party season, and in a really wearable size!

The extent to which I'm considering buying this is troubling me.

Special film screening at Rashtrapati Bhawan

Harishchandrachi Factory' is India's official entry to Oscars

A special screening of Marathi film "Harishchandrachi Factory", India's official entry to the Oscars, will take place at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Jan 16.

The film, that will hit theatres on Jan 22, will be screened at the President's Estate Auditorium.

Co-produced by Paprika Media and Mayasabha Production, the Dadasaheb Phalke biopic is the directorial debut of Mumbai-based theatre actor-director Paresh Mokashi.

Starring Nandu Madhav and Vibhawari Deshpande, the film is on the making of "Raja Harishchandra", India's first full length feature film made in 1913 by the pioneer of Indian cinema Dadasaheb Phalke.

Mokashi's low-budget period film was completed in January. It has bagged a series of international awards and honours.

This is the second Marathi film after "Shwaas" to be nominated by India for an Oscar in five years. "Shwaas" was Sandeep Sawant's directorial debut.

Akshay's new strategy for avoiding flops

He’s working for free!

Akshay Kumar won’t be charging anything for his next two films – “Khatta Meetha” and “Tees Maar Khan” – which are being co-produced by his production house Hari Om Productions.

Trade circles say that Akki, who has reportedly even signed a film for a fee as high as Rs.71 crore, has had a change of mind.

The actor explains the logic behind this drastic move of not charging his market fee: "My fee for both the films will be zero. If both films are hits, then my production house will stand to benefit by getting a part of the profits. If the film is average, the profit margin will automatically be reduced. However, it's important to note here that even if the film flops, no one will lose money because the budget has been controlled."

It’s believed that Akshay’s astronomical fee for films like “Chandni Chowk To China”, “8x10 Tasveer” and “Kambakkht Ishq” unrealistically increased the budgets of these movies making it hard for them to recover the huge investments thereby causing them to tank at the box office.

And, the nominations go to… ‘3 Idiots’

Movie features in 21 categories of Star Screen Awards

It’s that time of the year again. Bollywood’s annual award nights are all set to roll and quite understandably, “3 Idiots” is poised to dominate.

Up first is the Star Screen Awards and “3 Idiots” has secured a nomination in 21 categories! In fact, the movie has already won the distinction of earning the highest number of nominations in the 16 years since the Screen Awards started.

Aamir Khan has famously boycotted all popular awards, year after year, and we wonder whether he’ll show up at any of these events now.

Traditionally, Shah Rukh Khan has featured prominently at these awards nights, but as this year he had no release except “Billu”, SRK has got no nomination.

However, King Khan still holds the record for maximum nominations (17) across categories at Star Screen Awards. Aamir is the next closest competitor with 12 nominations.

Another heavy weight this year is Katrina Kaif who has topped the Screen survey of the Most Paisa Vasool Multiplex Star and has got the maximum votes for an actor who represents the changing face of Bollywood.

Katrina has also for the first time won herself a nomination in Best Actress category for “New York”.

Abhishek all set for TV debut

Launch date of game show yet to be announced

Dressed in a bright yellow coat over a pale yellow shirt and white trousers, Abhishek Bachchan sports a metrosexual look for his debut TV show "National Bingo Night" to be aired on Colors.

Apart from that, the actor sports a baby pink jacket for the promotional photo shoot for the show.

However, this isn't the first time Abhishek is flaunting the metrosexual look - he made similar style statements in movies like "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" and "Dostana".

He is extremely excited about the show, being produced by Fox Television Studios India Pvt. Ltd.

"It's a fun-filled show where the whole country will be my guest without applying any brains or answer any difficult questions. This is such a chilled out concept and something that has never been done before in India. The sheer simplicity of the idea and the fact that this show is highly interactive is what attracted me to it," Abhishek said in a press statement.

The game show will have two fast-paced rounds of the popular guessing game 'Bingo'.

The formal launch of the show was preceded by a flurry of marketing activity including teasers on the channel. For the past few weeks, viewers could see glimpses of Abhishek reclining on a chair or dozing in a cosy bed in promos announcing the launch of his 'Aaram Classes'.

"The idea here is that it's a show which is to be enjoyed by relaxing. That's why we came up with the concept of Aaram Classes... we want people to chill out and play this game. There's no stress, no tension involved at all. So tune in to learn 'aaram' and get ready for Bingo," said Abhishek.

The launch date of the show has yet to be announced.

The format of the show is owned by 20th Fox Television Distribution and it has run successfully in the US, Australia and Philippines.

Shaleen Bhanot denies looking like Shah Rukh

TV actor putting heart and soul into new serial

Shaleen Bhanot with wife Daljeet Kaur
TV actor Shaleen Bhanot says his look in NDTV Imagine's new show "Do Hanson Ka Jodaa" has no similarity with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's in the hit movie "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi".

"I think he (Shah Rukh) will commit suicide if he comes to know that somebody is comparing me to him. But honestly, there is no similarity between his character and mine. Maybe we look similar due to the get up, but there have been other actors like Amol Palekar who have done such roles before," Shaleen told IANS.

In "Do Hanson Ka Jodaa", which will premiere on Jan 18, Shaleen plays Suryakamal, an ordinary looking middle-class man who gets married to Preeti, a girl who dreamt of marrying a handsome hunk. The show is about how Preeti adjusts with Suryakamal.

"The only reason why they have built up such a look for the lead is because a simple, middle class man who is very religious towards his work, usually looks like that. Spectacles, a neat pair of trousers, a crisp shirt and at times, oily hair - and that's just my look in the show," he said.

At a time when all male actors are busy pumping iron for the perfect six packs, Shaleen lost six kgs of muscle and grew a moustache to play the simpleton.

"I have put my heart and soul towards this show. I had to lose six kgs of my muscle, I had to grow a moustache and even my side locks. I have put in a lot to make my character look real and I hope the show turns out well," said Shaleen.

Though Shaleen was using a fake moustache at first, he decided to grow a real one.

"A fake moustache looks fake. So I thought I'd rather grow my own moustache. I am very religious towards my work. I felt the fake one was hindering my acting and my performance, and I wanted to be very natural," he said.

A former MTV "Roadies" participant, Shaleen has also acted in shows like "Saat Phere", "Kulvaddhu" and "Kaajjal". However, he came into spotlight when he won dance reality show "Nach Baliye 4", in which he participated with his then girlfriend and now wife, actress Daljeet Kaur.

The duo tied the knot on Dec 9 this year. But they haven't even had the time to plan their honeymoon yet.

"I'm on the 70th heaven as of now. I don't know when we will go for honeymoon so we are trying to take out as much time as we can to roam around with each other as of now," he said.

Amitabh to do news roundup on TV

Catch him discussing global issues on Dec 31

picture: Getty Images
After playing Auro from "Paa" in a number of off-screen events, Amitabh Bachchan now assumes the role of media magnet Vijay Harshwardhan Mallik from his forthcoming movie "Rann" and will appear on a TV channel to do a year-end news round-up.

"And we aren't just talking about entertainment-related activities," said the film's co-producer Sheetal Talwar who was present when Big B donned the garb of a news anchor holding forth on events of the year from the world on the news channel Times Now.

"And it was events from the world of global politics. Mr. Bachchan just took over the television space as though he had done news analysis all his life. It was an amazing experience," Talwar told IANS.

On Thursday (Dec 31) night the megastar will reportedly be heard talking on roughly six global issues of 2009 - Indian national politics, terrorism, cricket, swine flu, recession and Obama on an hour-long segment.

This would be the first of several media-related activities that the Big B is scheduled to participate in before director Ram Gopal Varma's "Rann" hits the screens on Jan 29.

Apparently he intends to assume whatever character he plays in his forthcoming films and promote the film as the character rather than 'Amitabh Bachchan'.

'3 Idiots' accused of glorifying ragging

NGO complains to Supreme Court

A voluntary organisation working against ragging in India has complained to the Supreme Court appointed anti-ragging committee about the menace being glorified in Bollywood film '3 Idiots'.

"We have written to the R.K. Raghavan committee about the ragging scene in the film.

Raghavan has assured us to take appropriate action," Harsh Agarwal, head of the Coalition to Uproot Ragging from Education (CURE), told IANS.

"... recently released movie 3 Idiots has a scene on ragging, shown in a lighter sense. This is director Raj Kumar Hirani's second film, first being Munnabhai MBBS, where ragging has been used as a theme to make the audience laugh," Agarwal has written in his complaint to Raghavan.

"This not only shows the insensitivity towards the issue but more importantly such acts significantly add to the confusion already existing in the society vis-a-vis ragging. Millions of people, who don't know anything about ragging but have watched Munnabhai MBBS, till today remember the scene from this film and believe that ragging is all about dance and fun," the complaint adds.

Agarwal said instead of creating awareness against ragging, "the movie is glorifying it. Treating it as a subject of fun. This must end as hundreds of students across India suffer a lot due to ragging."

According to a study by CURE, the number of ragging cases reported (from July 2008-June 2009) are 88, number of ragging deaths are 12 and number of attempted suicides (due to ragging) are five.

Retro style seamed stockings, perfect for New Years evening.

We can't think of anything that's more fashionable with your spectacular holiday dress than seamed stockings, but of course we are very biased (and we would definitely recommend the sparkly silver Christian Louboutin shoes the model is wearing above, but that is a different post). We definitely don't believe in bare legs with your beautiful holiday outfit. You can find black seamed sheer stockings, seamed thigh highs, silver and gold seamed stockings, metallic seamed thigh highs, or simply shimmery thigh highs and sparkle pantyhose here. Fabulous European contrast lace top thigh highs can be found here.

Click on the links above to find sensational holiday legwear for an unforgettable evening!

Like really really platform. Really plastic. Yes. This is happening. And you have Vivienne Westwood to thank.

Now I couldn't for a hot split second wear these without toppling over, but I love the Nike, Winged Goddess of Victory vibe. And if I COULD wear them, I'd probably just say fuck it and wear them with black sequined leggings. At that point, why not?

More of Fashionbinge's plastic shoe obsession.

Anupam's one-man play to complete 200 shows

Story about failures in his life

Anupam Kher is all set for the 200th show of his one man play "Kuchh Bhi Ho Sakta Hai". Director Feroz Abbas Khan says making a play with a single character was quite challenging.

"Structuring the whole concept was a real challenge. I have done big productions with at least two characters. But making a play with one character who is narrating his own story was really a big challenge for me," Khan told IANS.

"Kuchh Bhi Ho Sakta Hai" will complete its 200th show at National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) here Jan 3. In this play, the actor has focussed on failures in his life.

"Talking about success can boil down to lots of self indulgence and that can be irritating for the audience.

"I gathered the materials from his (Anupam) inputs. But if we had used those raw facts, it would have become a documentary. There had to be a story that contains entertainment, suspense and at the end it should connect to make it successful," said Khan.

Celina wants to do a Bengali film now

It’s one of her targets for 2010

picture: ITP Image
Celina Jaitley has already dabbled in Telugu and Kannada films and the former beauty queen now wants to work in a Bengali film, preferably one with Rituparno Ghosh.

"I have spent a lot of time in West Bengal and this is the reason I can easily associate myself with the place, culture and the language. I would really love to work in a Bengali movie because I feel they make very emotional and interesting movies," Celina told IANS in an interview.

"The way they weave stories is fascinating. They simply touch the human chord. I would love to work with Ritu-da (Rituparno Ghosh). This would be one of my targets for the next year," she said.

Celina is riding high after winning the best female actor award for her performance in the English film "Love Has No Language" at the 33rd Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) held Nov 10-20. The movie was a New Zealand entry at the film festival.

"This year has been so good. Winning this award has been an icing on the cake. These awards work as a motivation factor and help you perform better. As the role was a bit different from the conventional roles I do, it worked," said the actress.

"I have always seen that whenever I have attempted something different, I have been appreciated," she added.

"Love Has No Language", an engaging romantic movie, was directed by Ken Khan and stars New Zealand actor Ben Mitchell as well as Hindi film actors Rati Agnihotri and Kiran Kumar.

The 28-year-old, who has featured in Hindi movies like "Janasheen", "No Entry" and "Golmaal Returns", has seven movies in her kitty and is confident that she will make her presence felt on the big screen next year.

The model-turned-actress doesn't understand why people question her if she opts to do only a few movies.

"If Aamir Khan does one movie at a time, he is applauded but if Celina Jaitley chooses to do a few movies, she is criticised. Why such disparity?" the actress asked.

Apart from acting, Celina is involved with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and is also a gay rights activist.

"In my free time, I love to work for the causes I strongly feel for. All these things are no substitute for romance but they are something that I feel responsible for," she said.

"I choose to live my life fully and it deserves appreciation," she added.

The actress will soon be seen in movies like "Accident On Hill Road", "Run Bhola Run" and "Chai Garam".

Bollywood actress Celina Jaitley will be performing at Country Club in Mumbai on New Year's Eve, and not at JW Marriott as per earlier reports.

As per Celina's representative there was some mis-communication about the venue.

"There have been confusing reports recently about my performance on Dec 31. I would therefore like to clarify that I will be performing at Country Club and not JW Marriot," said Celina in a statement.

Exclusive: Casely-Hayford SS10 Look Book and Interview

The Casely-Hayford duo applying the finishing touches to their wonderful offering at Menswear Day.

Before the festive break we mentioned that we would have an exclusive gift for you on the 29th and right on time, we can now deliver our late Christmas present to you....the first look at Casely-Hayford's SS10 look book along with an interview with our favourite design duo. One of the real highlights of the extended Menswear Day back in September was Casely-Hayford's collection entitled Kings of the Kings Land. Inspired by the raw energy of Kingsland Road (where their studio is based) they unveiled a new style tribe, the 'Afropunk.' For the benefit of those who live outside of London, this seemingly unique and unconventional corner of the city is where original EastEnders co-exist with the more recently landed public school boys. This incongruous social mix conjures up a rich sartorial vocabulary which the Casely-Hayford's have used to create a new English style.

The first look at Casely-Hayford's SS10 look book.

Steve left the Fashion East Menswear Installations inspired by what he had seen but was impatient to learn more about this collection in particular. With this in mind, we caught up with Charlie and Joe to talk about the collection in more detail and to find out about their exciting plans for the year ahead whilst revealing their SS10 look book for the very first time...

A new form of sartorial mix. English Wedgewood style fused with Turkish Ottoman prints.

SS: The collection was inspired by the sights and sounds of Dalston's infamous road, Kingsland Road. What is it about this part of East London which makes it so special and so inspiring?
Casely-Hayford: We've always been interested in the idea of 'the trans-cultural' - an enriched summation of many cultures to create a unified whole, forming a sartorial mix which is unique to the UK and possibly at it's most direct in London. For us, this area of London perfectly captures the spirit simply by walking from one end of the Kingsland Road to the other. It is possible to experience some of the worlds most prominent cultures, and we wanted to echo this mood in our collection. We are excited by the way that new conclusions are drawn from this cultural fusion.

The English DNA of the brand is fused with the colour and ornamentation of beautiful prints and hard-egded far-eastern embellishments.

SS: Your first two collections have seen you fuse elements of traditional English tailoring with facets of sportswear and this one sees you continue this sartorial cocktail with the unexpected addition of African elements to the mix. Do these combinations reflect the two of you in anyway, or perhaps the interchange and evolution of your own aesthetics?
Casely-Hayford: It wasn't so much the African element that initially enticed us - it was the similarities between the powerful youth culture of London Punks and the age-old aesthetics of traditional tribal wear. The synergy between the two seemed interesting and relevant to an emerging subculture that was as of yet undefined. We were able to retain the English DNA of the brand whilst fusing it with the colour and ornamentation of these beautiful prints and hard-egded far-eastern embellishments.

A unique combination of the delicacy of the Casely-Hayford aesthetic mixed with the raw energy of the anarchic youth created a trans cultural sartorial punk that we came to define as the 'Afropunk'. All the essential Casely-Hayford elements are still central to our statement, we are simply introducing another facet.

We have spent a lot of time discussing how we define culture and both agree that it is something which is not static. For each generation there is a defining point. We felt that with this collection we could begin to touch on an aesthetic shift from one decade to the next.

Introducing the Afropunks

SS: You unveiled the 'Afropunk', as part of the extended Menswear Day at LFW, how has the reaction been to your new style tribe? And did you have a chance to enjoy the day at all?
Casely-Hayford: The reaction has been overwhelming! We didn't really expect it. It's funny that through making a stronger visual statement we seem to have connected with a wider audience. People have been keen to embrace our vision. The Casely-Hayford sartorial mood prevails but through countering cliched notions of luxury we have been able to celebrate fine craftsmanship in a modern context.

It is always difficult presenting a personal statement to the public where the designer's intention transcends the power of the viewer's interpretation, but throughout the day we were pretty surprised by the positive reaction we received from a wide and diverse range of individuals.

Rather than doing a runway show, from the very beginning we made a decision that our seasonal statement would be in the form of a selection of images that reflected the brand identity. We are interested in creating something for the few, rather than reaching out to every man. Last LFW was an exception that appealed to us because it was the 25th anniversary. The Menswear Day was significant in finally creating something credible for buyers and press in London that wasn't dominated by womenswear.

Relaxed, luxurious tailoring... English Wedgewood style.

SS: The moment Steve walked in to your space inside Somerset House's East Wing, he was struck by how meticulously styled and cast the collection was and this has been continued through to the look book. Do you enjoy the styling aspect? What was the inspiration for the ornate embellishment of Turkish prints?
Casely-Hayford: I think there are very few designers that style their own collections. But it is a major part of the process for us. There's such a strong narrative behind each garment, the story would be incomplete if the stylistic vision was not carried through with exacting measure. We felt that the ornate patterns formed the perfect cross over point between English Wedgewood style and Turkish Ottoman prints.

The "hankersleeves" featured in the look book and presentation seem to have caught a lot of people's attention. We were looking at tribal notions of beauty and wanted to utilise the metal hoops that various African tribes use to elongate areas of their body such as the neck and arms. We used colourful hand rolled silk handkerchiefs from Suffolk to anglicise the look and make it our own.

A closer look at the much talked about 'hankersleeves'.

SS: 2009 has been a huge year for Casely-Hayford, what have been the highlights for you both?
Casely-Hayford: It's been an amazing year. Being approached by several top international retailers was a major endorsement of what we are doing. Collaborating with Swaroskvi on their first ever menswear project along with Lanvin and Phillip Lim has been really exciting... and working on this new project with John Lewis has been so fulfilling. I don't think there's been anything like it before - it's essentially a celebration of 'the Best of British' under one umbrella. Each season my father will be designing a complete wardrobe and collaborating with some of the most highly respected British heritage brands for John Lewis to create new unique garments. We received some of the samples just before Christmas and they look really strong. The first items should be in store from the end of February. Lulu inviting us to take part in London Fashion Week as part of Fashion East was obviously also another highlight of the year.

We are sure to replicate Casely-Hayford'd styling when the warm sunshine returns next year.

SS: What are you looking forward to in 2010? And...can you share any hints as to what you'll be showing in February 2010 and beyond?
Casely-Hayford: 2010 will hopefully be a year of greater international expansion for the brand. We've been approached by some interesting stores over the last few months who we hope to work with in the near future.

Autumn is a little darker and harder than previous collections, Focusing more on craftsmanship and quality... but once again pushing the boundaries of English sartorialism and British anarchy.

Two final looks at SS10 before we begin looking forward to the year ahead.
